Abstract

During 1980 December and 1981 February, atmospheric Cerenkov light flashes were observed in a broad region of the sky including the Crab pulsar. The 1981 February data gave a flux upper limit of 5.3 x 10 to the 13th/sq cm s for 10 to the 15th eV gamma-rays within 3.5 deg of the Crab pulsar. Comparable limits were set over a declination band of 0-70 deg and a right-ascension interval from approximately 0 to 13th. A weak (3.1 sigma) excess from the Crab vicinity was detected on 1980 December 9. The excess may be due to a variable flux component that sometimes exceeds 2 x 10 to the -17th/sq cm s above 10 to the 15th eV.
