Abstract

A numerical model is used to describe the modification of the rotational broadening function by differential rotation in late-type stars. It is shown that the differences between the Fourier transforms for solid body and differential rotation for stars with small polar inclinations less than 60 deg are more conspicuous than the differences described by Gray (1977) for stars seen equator-on (polar inclination equal to 90 deg). Furthermore, the signature of equatorial acceleration may be distinguished from that of polar acceleration, since the former acts to decrease the amplitude of the first sidelobe, while the latter increases the first sidelobe amplitude. An observational scheme for the detection of differential rotation is outlined.
