Abstract

It is shown that the gamma radiation observed from 3C 273 can be understood as second-order Compton radiation scattered off the compact microwave synchrotron source. This provides strong support for a Compton interpretation of X-ray emission in such objects. Other sources with large X-ray to microwave flux ratios should also be examined for gamma-ray emission.
