Abstract

Direct electronographic observations of Markarian 205 and NGC 4319 in the 6000-7000-A region do not support the existence of a physical luminous connection between the two objects. Spectra of the small faint condensation about 3 arcsec NNE of Markarian 205 show stellar absorption lines at the redshift of Markarian 205, demonstrating that the condensation is actually a galaxy associated with Markarian 205. Close examination of the spectrum of Markarian 205 itself reveals the presence of Ca II K and Mg I b absorption features. These results strongly favor an interpretation of Markarian 205 as a luminous Seyfert galaxy at the distance indicated by its redshift and unassociated with NGC 4319.
