Abstract

The isotope composition of material ejected from the carbon star IRC +10216 has been examined by means of isotopically substituted species of CO, CS, and HCN. The rare isotopes included in the measurements are D, C-13, N-15, O-17, O-18, and S-34. It is found that some abundances are consistent with their terrestrial counterparts, while others not only are nonterrestrial but are also significantly different from values obtained for giant molecular clouds. These results extend our knowledge of galactic enrichment via mass loss from late-type stars. New upper limits on N2H(+) and HCO(+) indicate that ion-molecule chemistry is not important in this cloud.
