Abstract

Polarization direction and magnitude are reported for infrared sources at 2.2, 3.5, and 11.5 microns of the galactic center (Sgr A). The polarization orientation at 2.2 and 3.5 microns is found to be nearly parallel to the galactic plane, while that at 11.5 microns is approximately perpendicular to the plane. Possible origins of the wavelength-dependent orientation are discussed; grains in the spiral arms are suggested as the cause of polarization in the near-infrared sources, but the 11.5-micron flux is probably polarized by grains in or near the infrared sources of Sgr A. These conclusions concerning the polarization by grains lead to some estimates of the magnetic field alignment of the particles; the data suggest that a more efficient alignment mechanism than that provided by Davis-Greenstein (1951) may be in effect.
