Abstract

Results are presented for UBV photoelectric photometry of the two early-type supergiants HDE 271227 and HDE 271213, which are candidates for the optical counterpart of LMC X-2. It is shown that HDE 271227 is an eclipsing binary of the Beta Lyrae type, that its remarkably smooth optical light curve is different from those of other X-ray binaries, and that it may be eliminated as a candidate. It is concluded that the photometric and spectral characteristics of HDE 271213 make it an excellent candidate for the optical counterpat of LMC X-2, even though the required periodicity of about 23 days cannot be confirmed.
