Local Interstellar Reddening
Abstract
With the help of the Bright Star Catalogue, an analysis has been made of interstellar reddening as a function of heliocentric distance and galactic latitude and longitude. Intrinsic B - V colors have been determined for spectral types 09-K5 for each luminosity class I-V, and also for types MO-M6 for lumi- nosity class III. Color excess was then plotted as a function of distance for 204 zones, covering the entire sky. At low galactic latitudes (I b"I «= 100), an average reddening of 0.17 mag kpc' was determined. Several regions where the reddening occurred predominantly in a r~arrow distance range were found. At high galactic latitudes (lb"I > 200), color excesses were found to be <0 1 mag in nearly every direction
