The Spectra and Luminosities of White Dwarfs.
Abstract
From observations made with severai spectrographs attached to the 82-inch McDonald and the 100- inch Hooker telescopes preliminary spectral classifications are given for forty-four white dwarfs. Using all available parallaxes and color indices for these stars, it is shown that the white dwarfs appear to occupy a single sequence with considerable scattering in the H-R diagram, roughly parallel to the main sequence. Furthermore, it appears to be indicated that the diameters of most white dwarfs lie between four times and one-half that of the earth.
