Abstract

The first moderately high resolution observations of three broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs with PHL 5200-type profiles are presented. Relatively smooth absorption extends from the emission blueward out to wavelengths corresponding to as much as several tens of thousands of km/s. There is some structure in the absorption troughs of all the objects which may be due to the effects of radiation pressure. The Ly-alpha broad emission line region (BELR) is occulted by the QSO and must also be larger in extent along the line of sight than the Ly-alpha emitting region. The evidence for occultation of the regions creating the high-ionization BELs of C IV, Si IV, and N V by the BALR is discussed. It is concluded that the BALR occults all of the components of the BEL region in 1413 + 113. Limits on the BALR covering factor are discussed, and is is concluded that the BALR occults the N V BELR that the BAL flow is decelerating.
