Abstract

Generalized extension rules for the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) have been used to obtain a FITS extension for the transmission of catalogs and tables of astronomical data. The present self-documenting data structure can fully describe the names, formats, and units of a printable ASCII text table. Application of the present design to the transmission of relational database structures is also considered.
