Abstract

Attention is drawn to the dynamical importance of magnetic fields in beam models of the jets emerging from active galaxies. It is shown that lateral expansion of a jet can generate an azimuthal field which is capable of partially collimating the plasma flow. Long wavelength variations in the NGC-315 beam are interpreted as oscillations induced by the competing magnetic stress and thermal pressure.
