Abstract

Many quasars and other active galactic nuclei reveal characteristic radio structures called jets or beams. The properties of such jets are discussed within the framework of the Lynden-Bell (1978) mechanism for collimation. Thick accretion disks orbiting supermassive black holes can explain high luminosities of quasars and other active galactic nuclei as well as the fundamental properties of jets and beams emerging from them.
