Abstract

This paper describes the FITS binary tables which are a flexible and efficient means of transmitting a wide variety of data structures. Table rows may be a mixture of a number of numerical, logical and character data entries. In addition, each entry is allowed to be a single dimensioned array. Numeric data are kept in binary formats. The definition of the binary tables contained in this paper has been approved by formal vote of the IAU FITS Working Group, and is a part of the IAU FITS standards.
