Abstract

A series of CCD spectrograms was obtained of Tau-1 Ari (type B5 IV) and HD 17435 (A3) as the coma of P/Halley passed across those stars, at projected separations from the nucleus of 179 and 29 arcsec, respectively. No cometary contributions were detected at the positions of the interstellar features 5780, 5797, 6177, 6203, or 6269 A. Although the chemistry of cometary comae is believed to be very different from the interstellar, a rough argument involving cometary and interstellar CN column densities versus interstellar band strengths suggests that it was not altogether unlikely that 5780 A might have been detectable under the circumstances of the occultation of Tau-1 Ari.
