Abstract

The Kozai effect working in hierarchical triples has been implicated in such systems as merging supermassive black holes and the rearrangement of extrasolar planets. The formation of hierarchical triples is greatly assisted by dense environments, such as massive star forming regions and globular clusters, where interactions are much more common, and the high inclination needed for the Kozai effect is more easily obtained. I examine some types of resulting triples, and show how the induced eccentricity affects the evolution of these systems. For a triple consisting of a star with an inner native planet and a modest sized exchanged planet ( 10 ME at 50 AU), I find a large induced eccentricity of a Jupiter or Earth analog even for moderate inclinations. This can have grave implications for the possibility of life. When the triple consists of main sequence stars in a globular cluster, the induced eccentricity may cause the inner binary to merge and become a blue straggler star. This star would have properties which are a hybrid of the two previously posited blue straggler formation scenarios of collision or evolution.
