Abstract

We present modifications made to the EPIC general climate model to include forcing effects produced by solar insolation patterns with specific application to Uranus. We implemented a gray, latitudinally- and longitudinally-varying radiative forcing term to simulate both the diurnal as well as extreme seasonal fluctuations of solar insolation experienced by Uranus. In keeping with the radiative context of these modifications, we elected to forego EPIC's default Newtonian cooling scheme in favor of implementing a gray radiative cooling term based on H2-H2 collision-induced absorption and subsequent reemission in the mid- and far-infrared. We compare the results of this scheme with measurements of Uranus' temperature-pressure profile made by the Voyager spacecraft.

Additionally, we demonstrate dynamical results of this radiative scheme. We present our initial spin-up experiments from rest of Uranus' zonal and meridional winds with both equinoctial and solstice radiative forcing patterns. We compare our simulated zonal wind results to those derived from both Voyager-era solstice observations as well as recent equinox observations, which may exhibit seasonal change.
