Abstract

We have observed the 18-cm OH Lambda-doublet in comet C/2007 W1 Boattini, at 1667, 1665, 1612, and 1720 MHz using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory 100-meter Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the Arecibo Observatory 300-meter telescope. GBT spectral line maps at a spatial resolution of 8 arcminutes were obtained 13-15 June and 11 July, 2008, with an additional nucleus-centered spectrum observed on 27 June, 2008. Arecibo spectral line maps at a spatial resolution of 4 arcminutes were obtained on 19 and 27 July, 2008. For this comet, we had the rare opportunity to detect all four hyperfine lines with the GBT in on- and off-nucleus pointings. The hyperfine lines appear in their expected statistical ratio of 9:5:1:1, within uncertainties. Gas production rates log(Q) are between 28.13 and 28.26 in mid-June and between 28.18 and 28.58 a few weeks later. We find coma gas outflow velocities between 0.70 - 0.79 km/s. Collisional quenching is present within at least the inner 20,000 km of the coma during this same time.
