Abstract

We present our methodology and preliminary results from a search for wide (a > 1000 AU) binaries in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's (SDSS) Data Release Five (DR5). The SDSS DR5 sample contains 40,000 spectroscopically confirmed low mass stars, the largest sample of M dwarfs (dMs) ever assembled. We identify companions to the dMs by searching the SDSS photometric database for stars within 900" and comparing their respective distances, proper motions (calculated from matching SDSS with the USNO-B catalog), and reduced proper motions. This sample will better constrain various stellar parameters such as binary fraction, companion mass function, metallicity and activity fraction as a function of binary separation and height above the Galactic plane. These parameters along with the coevality of the components of a binary system will allow to examine and calibrate outstanding issues in the star formation scenario in the Galaxy.
