Abstract

We observed the binary asteroid (22) Kalliope with the adaptive optics (AO)-fed Near Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) on the Gemini North Observatory in January 2007. With a FWHM resolution of 0".13, the binary was resolved in both H and K bands with a separation of about 0".6. Clean spectra were extracted from the primary and the satellite. Preliminary results show that the flux ratio of the two components is constant across the wavelength range from 1.5 to 2.5 micron. The magnitude difference is 3.3, consistent with previous results from K-band AO imaging. This suggests that the binary was derived from a common parent body.
