Radiative Transfer in Lyman Alpha Galaxies - Observations

Abstract

If we assume that Lyman alpha galaxies (LAEs) are dust free, we find that they are in general young, low mass objects. However, it is possible that a clumpy ISM could enhance the Lyman alpha equivalent width (EW) such that an older, more massive stellar population could have a strong rest-frame Lyα line. This could occur if the ISM was sufficiently clumpy such that the continuum photons were extinguished while the Lyα photons would be resonantly scattered by the clumps. We investigate this radiative transfer scenario with a new sample of LAEs, which consists of six LAE candidates in the GOODS CDF-S, selected at z 4.5 with Hα narrow-band imaging obtained at CTIO. Grism spectra from the HST PEARS project confirm that at least half of our sample are at z 4.5. If we assume all these objects are indeed at z 4.5, they have rest-frame EWs from 50 - 180 Å. We will present results of stellar population studies of these objects, constraining their rest-frame UV with HST and their rest-frame optical with Spitzer. The broadband fluxes of these objects have high S/N due to their space-based photometry, resulting in the ability to have a higher confidence level in the resulting stellar population model fit. Initial results suggest that preferential extinction of the continuum in a clumpy ISM may play a role in the objects with the highest equivalent widths.
