Abstract

Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) are systems with a high degree of interaction and a wide variety in HI content and distribution. 21cm VLA observations have shown them to be HI deficient. There are clear indications of an intragroup medium from HI and X-ray observations for most of these groups. In an attempt to strengthen our understanding of the physical nature of the intragroup medium in HCGs we present highly sensitive GBT observations of a sample of 25 carefully chosen groups. This sample exhibits a broad range of HI content and morphologies. Our study clearly reveals the presence of a diffused extended neutral intragroup medium in most of these groups. This component is a significant fraction of HI observed using the VLA. From a comparison of GBT and VLA spectrums and the properties of the two instruments, we infer the nature and origin of this component. Furthermore, we also investigate correlation between the diffuse gas content and parameters like HI deficiency, Hubble type and evolution of the groups. There are indications of a presence of an intragroup medium extending much further out from the group center, which may have a much larger baryonic mass than previously thought.
