Abstract

Thanks to an array of major new ultraviolet, infrared, and visible-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic surveys, it has become possible to map the star formation in thousands of nearby galaxies, and derive integrated star-formation rates for hundreds of thousands of objects. This, in turn, will make it possible to quantify robustl the characteristic frequencies, strengths, and durations of starbursts, as well as the dependence of these quantities on the properties and environments of the host galaxies. Here we use result from several recent Hα surveys to characterize the local population of star-forming galaxies, and illustrate how such data ca be applied to constrain the properties and incidence of starbursts.
