Abstract

The Crab Nebula pulsar is well known for its emission of giant pulses. In this paper we present the results from an intensive multifrequency campaign conducted using Arecibo, the data from which are used to study the large-amplitude giant pulses, specifically, their rates of occurrence and frequency dependence. The data enabled us to identify and quantify the frequency structure of individual giant pulses caused by multipath propagation through plasma in the Crab Nebula, and place some constraints on parameters such as the transverse filament velocity and the pulsar-filament distance. Data from our new observations conducted simultaneously using the Arecibo and Green Bank telescopes are currently being analysed for further detailed characterization of giant pulses and to place better constraints on the parameters of the Nebula.
