Abstract

Based on detailed population synthesis calculations we argue that some Type Ia Supernovae could be edge-lit detonations of C/O white dwarfs that have accreted a critical mass of helium. We argue that the type of explosion is expected to change with metallicity and red-shift and may undermine their use as standard candles
