Abstract

We request a deep 100 ks observation of Abell 2390. This system has the best lensing data of all regular, relaxed clusters of galaxies, in addition to exceptionally high quality optical-dynamical data. The proposed observations will allow us to constrain the projected mass distribution in the cluster core to an accuracy <= 10 per cent, providing a rigorous test of the hydrostatic assumption. We will be able to distinguish between different theoretical models for the slope of the mass profile in the cluster core. The data will provide robust results on the variation of the X-ray gas/total mass ratio as a function of radius.
