Abstract

We report progress on a project to map the diffuse ionized gas in the Galactic nucleus using radio recombination line observations with the new 100 meter Green Bank radio telescope (GBT). Although a number of discrete HII regions are known to exist in the general area of the Galactic Center, relatively little is known of the existence or properties of any more broadly distributed component. Our goal is to determine if there is diffuse ionized gas associated with any of the extensive molecular and neutral atomic structures which have been observed. We have detected radio recombination lines at an angular resolution of six arcmin at several transitions around 2.2 GHz. The GBT measurements were made within one degree of the Galactic Center and in directions not known to have discrete HII regions. We will report on the kinematics and distribution of the emission, and its relationship to HI and molecular gas. The NRAO is operated by Associated Universities, Inc., under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.
