Abstract

The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope have been used to observe neutral hydrogen (H I) absorption and emission toward the historical supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 58 at an angular resolution of ˜1'. An analysis of the data shows concentrations of H I emission 5-35 pc in size. These emission features have column densities in the range 1 to 4 × 1020 cm-2, masses 20-1600 Msun and brightness temperatures 15-35 K. This detection represents an observation of the clumpy neutral medium with scale sizes of a few tens of parsecs at distances of several kpc. One of the emission features was also observed in H I absorption toward 3C 58. For this feature, a spin temperature of ˜90 K was derived. The fact that these emission features have relatively low temperatures suggests that they are components of the cold neutral medium. H I absorption observations from the WSRT have also revealed absorbing concentrations along the line of sight which have peak optical depths ˜0.8 and linear sizes of ˜0.4 pc. In agreement with earlier determinations, a kinematic distance to the SNR of 3.2 kpc has been derived.
