Abstract

Orbital elements of the short-period Am binary Delta Cap (P = 1.02 d) have been derived from high-dispersion spectrograms obtained at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory during 1986-1991. They confirm the general characteristics of the orbit as already known (in particular, the period is remarkably constant) but some questions remain about the precise values of K1 and V0, and whether or not the orbit is slightly eccentric. CCD observations from the McDonald Observatory, centred at about 640 nm, have failed to reveal any trace of the secondary spectrum. It is thus still not possible to determine the mass-ratio of the system and to use this as a constraint in the solution of the complex light-curve. Some general discussion of the likely properties of the system is given.
