Abstract

Results of imaging of NGC 5195 in the NIR J, H, and K bands with the Wyoming Infrared Camera are presented. The observations map a 3.5 by 3.5-arcmin field at a resolution of 2 arcsec. Data reduction is described and aperture photometry, which provides an unobstructed view of the galaxy from which to perform a morphological classification and make measurements, is presented. Three distinct components which are clearly visible in these images - a bulge, a bar, and a disk - are discussed. The central portion of the bulge has a surface brightness distribution consistent with a r exp 1/4 surface brightness law, and displays a pronounced isophotal twist. Inside the diameter marked by the ends of the bar, the surface brightness of the disk falls below the extrapolated surface brightness of the disk. It is concluded that the galaxy belongs to type II investigated by Freeman (1970).
