Abstract

An account is given of observations indicating the existence of a planet orbiting the neutron-star pulsar PSR1829 - 10, based on the Doppler effects on the observed arrival times of the pulses from the rotating neutron star. The planet is 10 times more massive than the earth and is in a virtually circular 6-month orbit. The existence of this planet, which may either have been created in the aftermath of the neutron star-generating supernova or antedates that event, challenges conventional theories of neutron-star formation from supernovae; it is also fundamentally pertinent to the issue of planetary systems' existence around other stars.
