Abstract

The X-ray spectra of G21.5-0.9, 3C 58, MSH 15-52, and CTB 87, which are four Crab-like supernova remnants, were observed with the Large Area Counter instrument onboard the Japanese Ginga satellite. In addition, the emission mechanism for these four supernova remnants is discussed. The Large Area Counter enables a more precise observation of photon indices due to its wide energy band and large effective area. Precise X-ray spectra in the 2-20 keV energy range are obtained. Each spectrum obeys a single power law with a photon index of about 2. This slope is similar to those of the well-observed Crab-like supernova remnants Vela X, the Crab nebula, and 1E 0540-693. It is concluded that the X-ray synchrotron radiation from all, or most, Crab-like supernova remnants is likely to have a power-law spectrum with a photon index of about 2. Reasons are then discussed as to why these photon indices tune to this single value, even though the various supernova remnants may differ from one another in physical properties.
