Abstract

The authors present near- and mid-infrared images of periodic comet Giacobini-Zinner taken during the summer of 1985. The near-infrared H and K observations covered five nights from 27 June to 13 September, including 11 September, the date of the ICE encounter with the comet. The comet was most active for the mid-August observations; then it faded by mid-September to approximately the absolute brightness observed in June. On 15 and 17 August the authors' maps show jetlike structure near the nucleus, and on all dates the radial surface brightness falls off as ≡ρ-1.5. The 10 μm maps, taken 31 August and 13 September, are of low signal-to-noise, but confirm the decrease in brightness by mid-September. The existence of jets suggests that the coma production rate is variable, which may account for the steep surface-brightness gradient.
