Abstract

The authors suggest that in many supernova remnants the three-dimensional distribution of emission is barrel-shaped, confined to the "staves", and with little or no emissivity in the "end-caps". Two excellent examples are examined in detail. Estimates are given of the wall thickness, and limits are set on the emissivity of the end-caps. Maps of 70 well-resolved remnants are used to examine the incidence of the barrel-shaped morphology. From the statistics it is argued that the majority of supernova remnants fall into the barrel category. Some mechanisms that might be responsible for this appearance are suggested.
