Abstract

New radio observations of 3C 58 at 151 and 2695 MHz are discussed, with reference to current theories of 'filled-center' remnants, in particular whether or not shells of fast ejecta surround them. The low-resolution (72 x 80 sq arcsec, RA x Dec) 151-MHz observations, and the Einstein IPC image, set a low upper limit on the luminosity of any shell around 3C 58; the X-ray limit is only one-hundredth of the luminosity of the shell of the SN of AD 1006, the faintest 'historical' shell remnant known. This result, together with the well-defined boundary of the remnant revealed by the high-resolution (3.9 x 4.3 sq arcsec, RA x Dec) 2.7-GHz observations, suggests that the parent supernova of 3C 58 (that of AD 1181) produced no fast shell of ejecta. These results, the spectrum of 3C 58, and the nature of any compact source within the remnant, are discussed.
