Abstract

The crater Plato has been a prime target for lunar observers since the seventeenth century, because of its conspicuous dark floor and large size. Abnormal appearances of the crater have been reported since the 1940s, and these are frequently associated with the variable brightness of the craterlets and markings on the floor. This paper describes the topography of the region, and the current and historical observations of the crater by BAA members.
