Abstract

High-spatial-resolution surface-brightness images at J (1.25 microns), H (1.6 microns), K (2.2 microns), and L-prime (3.8 microns) of the infrared source GL 961 were acquired using the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. The images show that GL 961 is an infrared double system with the components separated by 5.8 arcsec at a position angle of 254 deg. Extinction and polarization measurements show that both objects are embedded in the same dark cloud at a distance between 1000 and 1600 pc. The probability that the two sources are physically associated exceeds 0.99. The infrared position of the eastern source coincides with the position of the known compact H II region in GL 961. The data on the compact H II region (0.59 arcsec observed angular diameter) is used to describe the eastern source as an H II region with electron density of 20,000-60,000/cu cm excited by a B5-B2 ZAMS star. At 1600 pc, the western source is shown to have an absolute J magnitude of - 5.34, with an upper limit on the luminosity of 6300 solar luminosities, which places it above the main sequence with an effective temperature less than 6300 K. The hydrostatic age of the western source is found to be 10,000-20,000 yr.
