Abstract

It is suggested that most of the high ultraviolet-excess objects found by Eggen are halo G and K subdwarfs with (log of) metal abundances less than -1.3. The analysis leading to this conclusion is concerned with model atmospheres constructed for a grid of models with log g = 5.0 and 4.0, effective temperatures between 6000 K and 3500 K, and metal abundances such that -6 is less than log (metal abundance) which is less than 0. Theoretical line free colors in the UBVRI and the uvby systems are computed from the models, and these data, along with calculation of the tangential velocities as less than 400 km/s, supports the identification of the HUV objects with the subdwarfs. It is suggested that a group of red stars which seem to have luminosities between the main sequence and the subdwarf sequence are unevolved dwarf stars.
