Abstract

The development of the dynamo theory of cosmic magnetic fields during the last twenty years is critically surveyed. After a general introduction to the theory, separate sections are devoted to the steady-state theory and the theory of turbulent magnetic fields. The problems raised but not answered by earlier work are generally surveyed, and the important questions needing a decisive answer are enumerated.
