Collection and Launching of Cs Atoms in a Four-Beam Optical Lattice
Abstract
We have investigated the feasibility of using a four-beam optical lattice for an atomic fountain clock. We have demonstrated the direct collection of 2.4 x 10^6 Cs atoms into the lattice. We have measured a lattice temperature of 1.4 ± 0.3 μ K and have launched atoms, using frequency offsets in the lattice beams, to a height of 0.8 m with a temperature of 1.7 ± 0.1 μ K. These results will be compared to the collection and cooling performance of a six-beam optical molasses under similar conditions.
